Doug Haynes manages The Council’s Advisory Services arm, providing strategic advice and counsel to clients across various industries. In addition to advising client executives, Haynes advises boards and committees on issues including strategy, governance, risk management, performance improvement, mergers and acquisitions, capital allocation, and organizational transformation. Previously, he was the President of Point72 Asset Management. Before Point72, Hayne had spent 22 years working at McKinsey & Co., where he led the firm’s Northeast U.S. Region and founded one of the firm’s most significant technology-focused practices. Before joining McKinsey, Haynes was involved in both technical and managerial positions.
During his 22 years tenure with McKinsey, Haynes worked with various executives worldwide. He embraced the company’s intellectual environment and developed meaningful connections with colleagues. These relationships were beneficial because they allowed him to gain new perspectives on business challenges. His experience also allowed him to engage on a higher level with senior leaders. This experience helped him understand how leadership shaped organizational culture. Haynes has been recognized by many industry publications for his expertise in innovation.
Haynes attributes his success to two guiding principles. Today, he says these rules keep him focused on what matters. He remembers his dad’s advice to work with honest, ethical businesses and individuals.
Haynes readily acknowledges technological advances that enable seamless remote working opportunities. However, he appreciates the personal connections that emerge from face-to-face meetings. “I see the value in having people together, interacting, sharing experiences,” said Haynes. Haynes believes it is essential to maintain this balance between face-to-face work and virtual collaboration. That way, managers can fully engage in their teams while maintaining the flexibility needed to accommodate actual life events.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the workplace and people’s interactions. With fewer physical meetings, we’re shifting towards virtual ones and video calls. However, he is optimistic about the future; Haynes believes the workplace is changing drastically. He hopes to see more emphasis on human interaction and quality interpersonal communication.
As an active community member, Doug Haynes knows firsthand how valuable it is to keep your promise. That drives him to give back to his community and charity whenever possible.
