Levi Pettit on the Changing Landscape of Finance Careers

Levi Pettit, a finance professional currently pursuing an MBA at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio Business School, offers insights into how the finance industry has evolved since he entered the field several years ago.

One significant change Pettit notes is the shift towards remote work, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The young people who want to pursue finance may find that attractive,” he says, referring to the increased flexibility in work arrangements. “They may see older friends or family who have these hybrid jobs, where they can travel or work from home.”

However, Pettit cautions against fully embracing remote work, especially for those just starting their careers. He emphasizes, “However, [for an] entry-level job, [they] really should be looking for opportunities where they can be face-to-face with people every single day. That’s where I learned the most — and how I grew the most.”

Pettit believes that in-person interactions provide invaluable learning opportunities, particularly for observing and learning from company leaders. “Unfortunately, I just don’t think remote environments provide that opportunity,” he states.

Despite these changes, Pettit maintains that certain fundamentals remain crucial for success in the finance industry. He advocates for continuous learning and skill development, noting that young professionals should be prepared to “potentially do more than what’s required to advance their careers—such as taking an online financial modeling course over the weekend to expand their skill set.”

Networking and mentorship also remain vital in Pettit’s view. He advises, “You’ve got to do it. You have to put yourself out there. Find mentors — I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the mentors I have in my life.”

Pettit’s perspective highlights the balance between adapting to industry changes and maintaining core practices that contribute to professional growth and success in finance.
