For the filming of Payne’s latest dark comedy, The Holdovers, which will be released later this year, Alexander Payne reconnected with Sideways actor Paul Giamatti this winter in Boston. It’s been a joyous homecoming for these two, who hadn’t worked together since 2004’s Sideways when they cooperated on the film. The film, which was a critical and economic success, won Payne the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2005. After working together on Sideways 18 years ago, Payne says, “we’ve wanted to collaborate on another project ever since. Even so, things worked out in the end, so he was able to play this character in The Holdovers. ” As the author explains, “Paul was in mind when I wrote it.
To his website’s credit, Payne says he prefers to start the casting process with a clean slate of potential performers and actresses. As the 61-year-old actor explains, “it is always depending on the requirements of the many characters in this particular screenplay.” According to the author, “I have generally avoided writing for certain performers.”
