Kelcy Warren started Energy Transfer in 1996 with co-founder Ray Davis as a small operator of intrastate natural gas lines in East Texas. Three decades later, the company moves roughly one third of the natural gas and crude oil consumed in the United States, a scale few in the industry anticipated when the two men were still counting on salaries to cover payroll. Turning Setbacks Into Growth
The path from a regional gas hauler to a coast to coast operator was not steady. When Enron collapsed in the early 2000s, plenty of firms that had copied its playbook folded with it. Energy Transfer instead used a $265 million purchase of Aquila as a springboard into a larger tier of the business. Later, as the 2008 financial downturn hammered natural gas prices, the company pivoted toward crude oil and natural gas liquids rather than waiting out the storm. Warren has said his team simply asked which use of a given pipe made the most sense, then acted on the answer.
A Legacy Beyond Pipelines
Energy Transfer now operates close to 125,000 miles of pipeline, exports natural gas liquids to dozens of countries, and counts assets stretching from North Dakota’s Bakken shale to the Gulf Coast. Warren stepped down as chief executive in 2020, handing daily operations to co-CEOs Mackie McCrea and Tom Long while remaining executive chairman. Outside the company, Warren is known in Dallas for the park bearing his son’s name, funded by a pair of gifts totaling $30 million.
