Michael Polk Trades Newell Brands Title for Private Sector

Michael Polk built a reputation over decades leading some of the largest consumer goods companies in the world, holding senior roles at Kraft Foods, Unilever, and Newell Brands before stepping away from public company life in 2019. That retirement did not last long. A year later, Polk returned to work as CEO of Implus LLC, a fitness accessories portfolio company owned by Berkshire Partners.

The move marked a departure from the scale and structure Michael Polk Newell Brands had known for most of his career. Instead of managing a sprawling public corporation with layers of reporting relationships, he took charge of a smaller, privately held business built around sixteen distinct brands with a footprint that reaches well beyond the United States. The timing added its own test, since his tenure began just as the pandemic upended operations across nearly every industry.

Rebuilding From the Ground Up

Despite the disruption, Polk guided Implus through a period of transformation, reshaping its operating model and strengthening its finances along the way. He has described the shift as a chance to get closer to the actual work of building a business rather than sitting several steps removed from it, a contrast he did not fully appreciate until he lived it.

At Newell Brands, Polk’s focus centered on high-level resource allocation decisions that kept him at a distance from front-line teams. Implus offered something different. “I spend much more time doing the brand and business development work directly with my team as opposed to focusing on resource allocation and having to work through layers in the organization to influence the demand-creation or cost-reduction choices people are making. I am right there with them in the crucible, helping them make the choices that are going to drive our business forward,” Michael Polk explains.

That hands-on posture has become a defining feature of his second act, one Polk says has brought him closer to the parts of leadership he enjoys most and reminded him why he chose this line of work in the first place. Refer to this article for more information.
