Few executives have seen the CEO role from as many angles as Michael Polk. The former head of Newell Brands spent decades leading major public corporations before pivoting to a smaller, private equity-backed company. The difference, he says, is substantial.
Polk came out of retirement in 2019 to lead Implus and has since developed a nuanced view of how company structure changes what the top job actually demands. While value creation is the goal in both settings, the path to get there looks quite different.
Managing Investors vs. Managing Operations
At a public company, CEO time is distributed across a wide set of demands. Michael Polk Newell Brands spent roughly 30 percent of his working hours in investor-facing activities earnings calls, shareholder engagement, and public market communication. That level of external accountability shapes how a CEO allocates energy throughout the organization.
“As a CEO of a public company, I was certainly spending thirty percent of my time with investors and with the public markets,” Polk notes. The remaining time is spent managing a broad talent pool and keeping a large, complex operation aligned to a strategic plan. Decision-making is filtered through layers of leadership, making the CEO’s role primarily one of direction-setting.
Private Company Flexibility
At a private company, the dynamic shifts considerably. Polk finds the owners of Implus focused on long-term development rather than short-term performance metrics. “Our owners are focused on the strategic development of the company because they know that this orientation will contribute to the long-term health of the company,” he says.
That orientation creates room for bolder choices. Polk describes the flexibility to take bigger risks as one of the defining characteristics of private company leadership. For Michael Polk, both environments have produced important insights and reinforced that certain qualities, like authenticity and accessibility, hold up in any context.
