The Gothic Revival Renwick Ruin in New York City has holes through its walls and is covered in ivy. It gives it the appearance of a decaying castle from medieval England. The abandoned hospital on Roosevelt Island was built in 1854. It is a quirky relic that can serve as a metaphor for its unusual location. The historic ruin contrasts past and present, like the 1950s brutalist building rubs against contemporary art on the island.
Surrounded by the East River, Roosevelt Island is located across from the heart of Manhattan. It offers people an improbable get away from the activity of the metropolis. Before Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and its CEO, Shelton Haynes, revitalized the area by completing initiatives started under previous RIOC administrations, the location’s reputation as a best-kept secret appeared secure.
Under Haynes’ guidance, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation unveiled the Nellie Bly Monument in December 2021 and the FDR Hope Memorial, commemorating President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in July 2021. As brand representatives for Roosevelt Island, RIOC persuaded investors of the island’s potential. New retail and hospitality buildings were built because of the public relations campaign.
Another accomplishment was hailed by Haynes and RIOC: Related Companies and The Hudson Companies, real estate developers, completed the $185 million in construction funding required to complete Riverwalk 9 apartment project. The 19-acre Riverwalk complex, which includes more than 2,000 residences, will have a 28-story skyscraper as its ninth and last structure. The Hudson Companies, Related Companies, and RIOC entered a long-term partnership that gave rise to the project in 1997.
Two-mile Roosevelt Island still has a small-town feel, despite its post-COVID image as an up-and-coming hotspot. Only 12,000 people are living on the island. They enjoy parks, fields, and tree-lined roads. Vistas of green are rare in New York City. Residents love the low-density living and views of One World Trade Center, the United Nations headquarters, and other notable structures.
RIOC, a state-run organization, oversees Roosevelt Island’s public transit, public protection division, roads, parks, buildings, and sports facilities. CEO Shelton Haynes supports the initiatives and encourages locals and visitors to check out the island’s shops, parks, eateries, and other attractions.
